Holy Trinity Church, Westbury on Trym, Bristol

Architect: Philip Hughes / John Heaton
Client: PCC Holy Trinity Church
A classic lime conservation programme to the tower of this city church. The project involved the 100% removal of cement followed by re-pointing in lime mortar, reconstruction of the distinctive spirelet incorporating new masonry elements. The architectural detail of the tower was treated to a programme of pinning, lime repair and shelter coat along with the repair, decoration and re-gilding of weathervanes.  The existing roof was replaced with copper and a new  lightning conductor system was installed.

Re-slating the nave, porch, nave stair turret and chancel roofs and making timber repairs.

Elimination of concrete wall gutters to the north and drainage alterations.

Consolidating and preparing the walls of the nave, porch, nave stair turret and chancel before grouting, rendering and limewashing.

Conservation of the nave and chancel windows and porch stonework.

St John The Baptist Church, Broad St,  Bristol

Architect: Paul Richold, Architecton.
Client: Churches Conservation Trust
St John the Baptist Church is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust.  It is one of four surviving churches from the 12th century built into the medieval town wall.  An important role of the church was as a place of prayer before travellers set out on their perilous journeys.  In the 19th century the church was subject to extensive modification and re-ordering.

Of particular interest are the figures on the south side entrance, Brennus and Belinus, who jointly reigned in England in pre-Roman times. Legend has it that Brennus is the founder of Bristol.

The Strachey & Strachey Conservation team are undertaking the following essential masonry repairs:
Cleaning of stonework to the tower and spire.  Lime pointing and masonry replacement.  Conservation of stonework, including medieval window tracery.  Dismantling and rebuilding the structurally unstable stair turret.  Conservation of the medieval statuary and shields following research into the historic paints used.  We are also reinstating lead gutters and redecorating the bell chamber using historically correct lime based paints and washes.
