Roman headstone, Roman Baths Museum, Bath

This Roman headstone was one item in an ongoing programme of archaeological conservation at The Roman Baths, Bath in the early 1980’s.  We have used this example as it is interesting to show items of work carried out some twenty years ago when the use of lime based materials in archaeological and museum conservation was not so widely practiced as it is now.

This fractured headstone had been in storage for some time and we were approached to put forward ideas for the display of this and other damaged items in the main museum.  A large section of the headstone was missing so firstly a Westwood Bath stone base was made to the overall base template to provide stability.  A low fired ( 850 ) ceramic armature was constructed to hold the Roman stone in place.  The surface of the support was then built up in a lime mortar similar in colour and texture to the original stone.  Finally the 1970’s repainting of the lettering was removed.
